Aki, Lolo & Lola in front of Urban Lights
I have a feeling this is going to be one of those photos that Aki is going to find twenty years from now, yellowing in an album he's just dug up out of some cupboard or basement archive. He probably won't remember taking the picture, or the visit his Lolo and Lola made in April 2010, but the proof will be right there in front of him.
He's even less likely to remember popping into LACMA with his grandparents and seeing the Renoir in the 20the Century show on the 2nd floor of the new BCAM building (which critics have lambasted, but is a decent assemblage of late works by a pretty muscular painter, and is convenient for those of us who won't be able to hop on a flight to Paris any time in the near future!).
Part of the reason it'll be hard for him to remember is that LACMA has a new, strict, and unpleasant no-photo policy, which includes not only the art, but anything inside their buildings. Which is too bad, because I thought one interesting photo project might be to just take pictures of all of the different types of chairs on LACMA's massive grounds.
Some of the mean docents on the first floor of BCAM even scolded Aki for touching the massive Richard Serra sculpture, which is basically a gigantic maze made out of corrugated iron. Relax, people! Talk about your spoil sports!
Luckily, Aki has taken to making his own art lately, thanks to some chalks his auntie Lisa bought him, and unlike the Broad family and the totalitarian meany-heads they employ at LACMA/BCAM, we generously allow photography of Aki's original artworks. So kick back and enjoy. You might even see some of Aki's "urban" and "guerrilla" art on or in your local stoops and sidewalks. We apologize for any inconvenience. But just remember, it washes off pretty easily.
