Chicken Soup with Tofu, Miso, and Lomo

As much as possible, we like to make Aki's food from scratch. Besides the fact that you know exactly what's going into your child's food, it's just fun. And since I feel like I could use some brushing up on my kitchen fundamentals, this full-time Daddy business is just great for everybody.

Well, at least when Aki likes what we make. And it's pretty easy to tell when he doesn't, because it ends up on the floor, in his hair, on his pants, etc.

Today, though, was a hit. Following Yuri's advice, I started off with some leftover, homemade chicken stock. Aki wasn't feeling well the other day, afer a bad reaction to his MMR, so we went with the tried and true chicken soup, with grated carrots and greens.

(I have to pause for a sec here and explain that I recently discovered the MoreLomo app for the iPhone, which simulates lomographic cameras, which is why these snaps got all arty.)

I added half a block of medium firm tofu, cut into cubes. After boiling it for about 3 minutes, I turned off the heat and stirred in a tablespoon of miso paste.

Aki, who's normally a picky eater (it's karma smacking me in the face!), gobbled it straight up, including the veggies.

And keeping on with the whole analog unpredictability of lomography, here's a couple more fun shots we took today, including one of us video chatting with Lolo and Lola. Aki hammed it up for them, of course, and for our part, we got to peer into my childhood home, through the picture window, out into the cul-de-sac and the last bits of a record year of snow.

We signed off and ran a couple of errands in the warmish weather, a nice change after a couple of chilly days, then came home to get our Friday Night dinner going.

OK, eating out once in a while is great, but eating together at home is as good as it was when I was a kid.
