Yuri kept encouraging me to take Aki to Story Time at the South Pasadena Library for, oh, about a month. She just didn't give up, even when I got cranky and snapped about how hard it is sometimes to get the little guy going before lunch time (especially when Daddy can get crabby after not writing for a couple of days).
Boy, am I glad I listened to my wife.
Besides being jam-packed with an amazing group of smart and funny kids (as well as their cool South Pas-area parents), South Pas's Story Time features what must be one of the greatest children's librarians ever.
What a reader! She started off with Taro Gomi's "Spring", and threw in a little singing and dancing, and a little wiggling to get out the willies to boot.
The noble librarian rewarded each of her auditors with a handsome hand stamp. I rewarded us with a post-Story Time pit stop at Kaldi's, my favorite coffee shop, which is just a stone's throw away.
What a mocha. And Aki couldn't get enough of the whipped cream.
Taking a stroll in South Pas's Mission District is, of course, a reward on any day, especially for a kid who loves to watch trains.
And we were pleased to see that the unlucky but lovely corner lot that's been the former site of both 750 ml and Little Parlor will soon be bringing our favorite Indian restaurant, Radhika, back to life.
Reading is also always a big part of our bed time routine, even last Saturday, when we joined a billion other folks for Earth Hour. With our lights and all non-electric appliances off, we read a little Easter tale by one of my favorite children's authors, Tomie de Paola, by candlelight.
From Day One, I hoped books would be as big a part of Aki's life as they are for mine. So far, so good.
