Nisei Week

One thing we love about living in So Cal is that even if you don't get a chance to travel much, there are still plenty of cultural events going on all the time that can make you feel global, worldly, and, well, full!

Because, of course, to us, culture = food.

We took Aki to his first Nisei Week Parade earlier this month in Little Tokyo and dressed him up accordingly. Thanks to Auntie Shu and the Fujimura family for Aki's colorful and adorable yukata!

And as far as the food, well, Japanese festivals mean street stalls hawking beer, yakitori (grilled chicken), grilled corn, okonomiyaki (grilled Japanese pancakes), and takoyaki (grilled octopus). Basically, anything you can throw on a grill and sell for a few bucks (excluding the beer).

While Aki, Mommy, and Daddy stuffed themselves silly, Uncle Tommy, Aunties Lisa and Alex, and Grandma were part of the parade, hammering out Taiko anthems with Chikara Daiko.
